Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction involves a variety of plastic surgery techniques to restore a breast to its near normal shape, size, and look after a mastectomy. This surgery can include multiple procedures performed in stages. Breast reconstruction by Dr. Ascherman usually falls into two categories, flap reconstruction or implant-based reconstruction. Implant reconstruction relies on implants to form the breast mound while flap reconstruction uses the patient’s own tissue to form the breast.

Implant or Flap Breast Reconstruction Procedures in NYC

First, anesthesia is administered to keep a patient comfortable during breast reconstruction surgery.  The next step will depend on the type of surgery being performed. For reconstruction with a flap, the donor site’s fat, muscle, and/or skin is taken from the lower abdomen, or sometimes from their back,  to reconstruct the breast. Dr. Ascherman will discuss these different flap choices with you in more detail at your consultation, and will help you to choose the one that is best for you.

For many women, implant-based reconstruction is chosen. This allows for an easier recovery than a flap surgery. The breast implant is placed into the body, usually following tissue expansion. Dr. Ascherman will discuss silicone and saline implant options, and will help you to choose which type is best for you. After this, the nipple and areola may need to be reconstructed as well in order to complete the new breast.

After breast reconstructions surgery, bandages will be applied to the incisions. Small drain tubes are usually placed under the skin to help drain excess blood or other fluid from the surgical sites. Length of healing depends on the type of reconstruction you have, but will take at least a few weeks while the swelling decreases. Dr. Ascherman will provide specific instructions to follow after your breast reconstruction surgery, all of which are important to obtain optimal healing.
