Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty

Tummy Tuck in New York City

A tummy tuck surgery is performed in order to improve the appearance of the abdomen area. This is achieved by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the muscular wall, all of which creates a more toned look. A flabby abdomen is caused not only by fat, but also excess skin, stretching of the connective tissues, and poor elasticity overall. Dr. Ascherman recommends this surgery for those with a stretched lower abdominal wall, individuals with excess abdominal skin and fat, and those who have had liposuction but still have excess skin. A tummy tuck procedure is often done at the same time as other procedures.

Abdominoplasty and Belly Fat Removal

Dr. Ascherman will make incisions in your lower abdomen that will remove skin and fat. After this, the fascia around the abdominal muscles is tightened with stitches, and he then repositions the remaining skin and recreates the belly button. The incision used is usually hip to hip and slightly above the patient’s pubic bone. If a mini-abdominoplasty is performed, a smaller incision is made and less tissue is removed. A full tummy tuck surgery may take about three hours, or sometimes more depending on the size of the abdomen.

After tummy tuck surgery, the incisions and the belly button will be covered with a dressing. Small drainage tubes near the incision sites will also be put into place to help promote fluid drainage. For the first several days after surgery, patients should keep their body slightly flexed to keep tension off the incision. The drains will usually be kept in place for four to five days post-op. Follow-up visits will regularly occur to ensure that healing is optimal.

Some risks associated with a tummy tuck that Dr. Ascherman can discuss with you during your consultation include:

  • Slow wound healing
  • Scarring
  • Fluid accumulation under the skin
  • Changes in skin sensation

A tummy tuck is usually successful at giving a patient a more toned and slimmer appearance. These results are long-lasting, but maintaining a healthy weight is important.
