This is a cosmetic ear surgery that is done to change the shape or size of the ears. It can be done by Dr. Ascherman for patients at any age after their ears have reached, or nearly reached, their full size. Most patients are at least 5 years old. This surgery is performed on individuals with one or both ears that stick out further from the head than desired, or on ears that are too large in proportion to one’s head. It is usually done on both ears to help with symmetry.
Some risks of otoplasty that will be discussed during your initial consultation with Dr. Ascherman, a New York plastic surgeon who has performed many of these procedures, may include:
- Scarring (most often hidden behind the ears)
- Changes in skin sensation
- Asymmetry (if present, usually very minor)

Dr. Ascherman normally makes otoplasty incisions on the back of the ears. Different techniques are used based on the type of correction needed for the patient. After he makes the incisions, excess cartilage or skin is removed. Next, cartilage is folded into the proper position, and is held in place with stitches. The entire surgical procedure can take about two and a half hours.
After otoplasty is completed, the patient’s ears will be covered in bandages. The patient may feel itching or discomfort. These bandages will be removed about one week after surgery, and then replaced. After the second week, the bandage is removed and a knit hat or other head cover should be worn at night for an additional week. This helps to keep the ears in their new position, particularly when someone may turn in bed. When the bandages are removed, an immediate change in the patient’s appearance is normally seen.
